Dialup
Frequently
Asked Questions
1. What does the ACD.net
Content Filter do?
The filter blocks potentially harmful web sites for customers who
choose to have it enabled. For instance, a parent with children that surf
the Internet wouldn't want them to see pornography.
2. Can I upgrade from my current ACD.net
plan?
Yes! you can have the piece of mind that your children or employees are
surfing the Internet safely and productively. Call Customer Service at
517-333-0900 or 1-877-422-3638 today and upgrade to the Gold 56K Dialup
Plan.
3. What types of materials does the Family
Content Filter block?
Sites classified as "Adults Only," Alcohol-related sites, Hate /
Discriminatory material, Drug-related sites, Gambling, Tasteless/Gross,
Graphic medical photos / extreme body modification, documentation on
illegal acts (lock-picking, bomb-making, fraud, hacker, profanity, nudity
and lingerie, sites that gather personal information, porn sites, school
cheating pages (term papers online, etc), sexual merchandise, information
on committing suicide or murder, tobacco-related sites, extreme violence
(mutilation, maiming, dismemberment, etc.).
Some sex, nudity and violence may be exempted if they are part of
classic works of art (such as Michelangelo's David, classic paintings,
Project Gutenberg, etc) or strictly written-word materials, materials of
educational value (ie, safe-sex, AIDS resources, breast cancer, etc). Some
chat rooms, if they are moderated by adults or are designed to be
"kid-safe," are not blocked.
4. How does the Family
Content Filter Work?
A Family Content Filtering server exists on ACD.net's network. Every day
our Filter server receives a new list of Internet web site URLs from
search engine partners, as well as sex sites which participate in
filtering programs to avoid legal issues. Those URLs are visited and
automatically scanned for keywords, and ones that don't pass the initial
scan go directly into a list of blocked sites. The sites which aren't
automatically blocked are then shown to a staff of human reviewers who
scrutinize the content on each page, and then classify each page as being
either safe or as fitting in one of the categories mentioned above. If
they fit into the above blocked categories, they are added to the site
list.
Each night, the latest list of blocked sites and keywords are uploaded
to our Content Filter Server and automatically put into action. You do not
have to worry about whether or not you have "the latest list" --
it's filtered on our server and handled automatically for you.
When you subscribe to the service you will only be able to connect to a
dialup number that has the filtering in place. There are no setting's to
enable or disable on your computer.
5. Is the filter 100% effective?
No. There's no current product on the market which can effectively filter
the Internet to be entirely "clean". We recommend that parents
and employers play an active role in their children/employees Internet
use. Note: ACD.net is not responsible if a subscriber is still
able to access potentially harmful materials.
Content filtering is only available on ACD owned numbers.
